Client

FinallyNana is a blog created and written by Beryl Jupiter. The blog documents Jupiter’s experiences as a grandmother. With a career in psychology and in writing, Jupiter has discovered that her experiences as a grandparent speak to those who share a similar age and role as a grandparent. Jupiter hopes that her blog can connect with other grandparents as she continues to share her adventures as a grandmother.

The Challenge

FinallyNana came to me through a referral looking for a logo that is both fun and grandmotherly in appearance. She preferred that the logo be a shade of purple. FinallyNana also wanted a logo that would look prominent for use in her blog and Facebook, as well as on business cards. Also, the project had a deadline of one week. Therefore, to get the job done on time, I worked diligently and communicated clearly.

Discovery

The Discovery phase began by searching the web for blogs and websites written by grandmothers for grandparents. I had to look to other similar blogs for inspiration since FinallyNana’s online blog was a work in progress at the time. I also went in search of logos that were grandmotherly in theme. Finally, I looked at typefaces that would be an appropriate fit in meeting FinallyNana’s needs. After collecting all of my research, I then compiled my findings into a mood board. This mood board would go on to aid me during the creation process.

Creation Process

The Creation Process started with sketching ideas on paper. I knew that FinallyNana was looking for a logo that personified a grandma, but yet looked and felt fun. After sketching, I migrated onto the computer. The ideas were designed using two different typefaces. Below are the first round of logos.

It was imperative that the design met the brief. Most importantly, it had to be clear that it was a blog by looking at the design. I decided to incorporate the element of a speech bubble to accomplish just that. I used two lively-spirited typefaces; Bubblegum Sans and SF Cartoonist Hand. Jupiter was deadset on a logo after just one round of presented logos. After a round of color options, we decided on a final design.

I constructed a logo that met FinallyNana’s brief and tight deadline. Two distinct elements make up the logo.

One being the playful and contemporary logotype, while the other is the grandma word bubble mark. This element answers FinallyNana’s need for the logo to be grandmotherly. The word bubble symbolizes the FinallyNana blog. Both elements come together to complement one another.

In terms of color, I used a purple hue per the client’s request. The finalized logo perfectly ties together the client’s request along with my own artistic license.
