Kick Brand Soccer Ball Design

Kick is a project I started here at Duvio Studio. Kick is a mock indoor & outdoor football complex (or “soccer” complex for USA based readers). The facility is home to its own team, with multiple teams for different age levels. Furthermore, this complex contains grass & turf fields, futsal courts, boarded fields, a gym, a food court, and a pro shop. Kick provides lessons to all skill levels and helps them to further develop their skills. It is also the host of organized leagues and tournament football matches all year round.

The main challenge for this brand was to create a logo that was based off a wordform. A wordform is a word in which its appearance describes exactly what it is. I wanted to create a logo that was both fun and expressed what the brand was about. Since Kick is a football brand, I wanted the word “Kick” to represent the action of kicking. Moreover, the logo needed to look good on jerseys and other merchandise.

The Discovery phase began with researching pre-existing wordforms. I compiled a mood board of wordforms that I found unique and attractive. Eventually, I landed on the word “Kick”. I realized that using a verb for this particular wordform best expressed what this brand represented. During this phase, I also researched existing football complexes and other sports facilities. I looked everywhere for inspiration and by doing so I prepared myself wholly for the creation process.

Kick Brand Identity Logos and Logomarks

The Creation Process began on pencil and paper. I explored the structure of the word “kick” and how its letters could be arranged & rearranged. The goal (yes, pun intended) was to design the wordmark in a way that emphasized the act of kicking. After sketching, I moved the creation process onto the computer.

I searched for fonts that were most suitable for my sketches. The font Futura Standard Heavy was a clear winner and I stuck with it. My strongest idea for the logo involved dropping down the tittle of the letter “i” (tittle meaning the dot of the “i”) in the word “Kick”. I then shifted the uppercase “K” downward and manipulated one of the letter’s legs to show it kicking the tittle. Even with the reposition of the tittle, the letter “i” was still recognizable.

Also, by just using the “K” and tittle, I was able to convert the wordmark into a badge. With a few more tweaks to the logo, I turned my attention to color. I chose black, white, and my very own custom green as the color palette. The logo would then lead to the creation of the whole brand identity, including the stationery suite and merchandise.

The main goal of creating a logo based on a wordform was a success. The impact of a wordform brings a sense of playfulness and engages the viewer. I was then able to expand on the logo by creating business cards, letterheads, and envelopes. An essential part of this project was the creation of merchandise. I designed a jersey, training jackets & sweats, a hat, and sports bottles. In conclusion, I’m very proud of this project and I hope to one day materialize this into a physical product.
