Client

The Bristol County Bar Association (BCBA) is a service organization comprised of attorneys dedicated to improving the quality of the practice of law. They provide support to the community, the bench, and the bar on issues relevant to the local community. Located in New Bedford, MA, they consider their members some of the most respected attorneys in Massachusetts.

The Challenge

BCBA came to me through a referral looking for a new and modern logo. Overtime, BCBA had lost steam and was not relevant or compelling to the newer generations of attorneys. Re-engaging people and getting more signups is very important, which is why a modern look is what they were aiming for.

Discovery

The Discovery phase began with analyzing BCBA’s website and competitors in order to get a feel of how they represented themselves visually. From there, I went onto researching the Bristol County law and court systems, as well as the history of Bristol County. Finally, I explored the history of New Bedford, where BCBA is located, including its environment, landmarks, culture, and traditions. By collecting all this research, I was able to capture the feel of BCBA by creating a mood board, which helped me hit the ground running before the logo creation process.

Creation Process

The Creation Process started with initial sketches. BCBA was looking for a logo that was modern. They wanted a logo that contained a serif typeface but were open to sans-serif. Also, they expressed interest in using a blue & gold color range that contained nautical themes relevant to New Bedford. After putting my ideas on paper, I moved on to vectorizing the sketches on the computer.

I wanted a logo that incorporated both law and nautical elements.  Consequently, I did so by combining them as shown in the initial round of logos. In order for the logos to appear effective on tee-shirts and other merchandise, I designed the logos to look like a badge.

Just as important, the logo needed to be fresh and modern, and appear radically different from its previous logo. To achieve modernism in the logo, I went with simplicity by using lines and geometric shapes. The typefaces used complemented the line design of the other elements in the logo. After one more round of logos, a round of color options, and a round of mockups, I nailed down the final design.

The final logo met all of BCBA’s needs. The logo is both minimalist and geometric, which speaks to its contemporary style. The design is a perfect unification of aspects that tie the law community and the city of New Bedford together.

The goal was to re-engage the younger generation of attorneys which was achieved with articulate & thought-out design. The new logo is a huge step-up from its predecessor in that it delivers a breath of fresh air. Furthermore, it will help attract future generations of attorneys & lawyers to come.

The revamped BCBA logo was well received with the community. Moreover, it was the jumping-off point for the revival of the Bar Association. Merchandise using the logo, such as t-shirts and sweatshirts, led to brand awareness. BCBA’s modern new logo & identity is a renaissance to a community that was in need of a spark to its image.
